3 Copywriting Books to Help You Write Better Copy

Updated: Jul 4, 2024

Whether you’re a small business owner or an aspiring copywriter, knowing how to write good copy for your brand (or perhaps other brands) is essential. The best copy is more than just words on a webpage – it's a tangible expression of your brand’s spirit and vision. The right copy adds nuance, meaning, and individuality to your brand’s message.

But writing good copy isn’t something that’s ingrained in our entrepreneurial brains. It’s something we have to work at, learn about, and, yes, practice. I know you’re probably having flashbacks of scenarios from high school English, but that’s not how learning to write compelling copy has to feel.

In fact, as someone who majored in English in college, writing copy is about as different from anything you learned in your most recent English class as you can imagine. One of the best parts is learning at your own pace and choosing exactly which “teacher” you vibe with.

To introduce you to the world of learning to write copy for business, here are three of my favorite copywriting books by three expert copywriters who’ll be your “teachers” in this new subject.

Below, you’ll learn which of these three books is right for you and your copy needs. Be sure to let me know what you think here in the comments after you’ve finished reading, and don’t forget to always keep your pen, highlighters, and sticky tabs handy to mark pages as you read.

1. Everybody Writes by Ann Hadley

"Everybody Writes" book by Ann Handley - book with white cover and title in red, authors name in black

Everybody Writes is the perfect book for you if writing’s just...never really been your thing.

Hadley breaks down topics from grammar dos and don'ts to composing website landing pages and everything in between. Read Everybody Writes all the way through, or use the Table of Contents and Index to find quick advice on specific topics.

One of my favorite things about this book is how encouraging Hadley is throughout each chapter. 🏅 No matter what your writing skill level is, you’ll come away from Everybody Writes with simple tips and strategies that work.

Best If: You're ready to gobble up allll the copy and content knowledge you can in bite-size, manageable chunks.

What Makes It Great:

• Short chapters help keep you focused and interested.

• Refreshers on basics so beginners feel comfortable.

• Wide breadth of topics means you'll want it nearby to refer to often!

2. Love-Based Copywriting Books Volumes 1 & 2 by Michele PW (Pariza Wacek)

"Love-Based Copywriting Books Volumes 1 & 2." Cover of book with title in black and green at the top. Top half of cover is white; bottom half is the same color green as title. "Love" has a red and white heart instead of an "o."

If you’ve never heard of love-based, or heart-centered, copywriting and marketing, you’ll want to check these books out. Michele PW offers a human-centered approach to writing copy and content and shows how to lead with the heart while successfully selling and growing your brand. 🫶

I advise purchasing this duo in the combined volume. That way, you’ll have both books easily accessible. Volume 1 focuses on the philosophy behind writing and marketing from a heart-centered space. Volume 2 dives into Michele’s tried and true love-based writing methods so you can feel confident about crafting compelling copy that comes from the heart.

Best If: You're seeking guidance on selling and writing copy while staying aligned with your brand’s spirit and values.

What Makes Them Great:

• Michele PW offers a fresh, heart-centered perspective on writing copy for a more authentic B2C connection that keeps everyone’s needs in mind.

• Packed with tips to help you implement love-based methods into your copy with simplicity.

3. The Copywriter’s Handbook by Robert W. Bly

"The Copywriter's Handbook." Cover of book is bright yellow with bright blue accents and black title and words.

This book is exactly what it sounds like: a complete handbook to writing copy. Like Everybody Writes, The Copywriter’s Handbook is complete with a thorough Index and Table of Contents, so you can choose the chapters or sections that apply to the project you’re working on. Or, if you’re a writing nerd 🙋‍♀️, you can read this handbook all the way through!

In my opinion, The Copywriter’s Handbook is more advanced and somewhat more detailed than Everybody Writes. If you’re a beginner and looking for which book to choose first, pick Everybody Writes, and you can graduate to The Copywriter’s Handbook later.

Best If: You're ready to dive deep into everything copy related.

What Makes It Great:

• A comprehensive handbook for copywriters; a gem if you want the real inside scoop.

• Once again, you can keep this handbook nearby for quick reference when working on projects. Bly uses lists and strategic sectioning to make finding what you need easy.
